Roveena’s Debut Album Harmonizes a Perfect World of Cultural Sound

Toronto, ON (PRWEB) October 16, 2012

The debut EP of Sri Lankan born Roveena is intoxicating, dramatic and emotionally provocative (Ponoka News). Upon first listen to Perfect World, a mini-album introducing an artist who combines vocal virtuosity with a highly accessible yet distinctively original musical vision. Perfect for the world of adult contemporary radio, the five-song disc boasts production values of the highest order while presenting a bracing mix of new contemporary material and a fresh take of a pop classic. This sets it apart from the majority of pop music churned out by record companies these days (Yorkton This Week).

The first single off her debut album, which is available on DMDS, is Roveena’s version of Mr. Mister’s smash ’80s hit “Broken Wings” features lushly evocative instrumentation and soaring vocals that pack an emotional punch.

Roveena studied psychology and music as an undergraduate at The University of Waterloo, but chose to pursue a career in Human Resources. Her love of music never diminished, and she began posting YouTube videos of her live performances. That led to a genuinely life-changing moment when Toronto’s CityTV invited Roveena to perform on their show Breakfast Television. She so stunned host Kevin Frankish with the power of her voice that a planned one minute segment turned into eight minutes, an appearance that would launch Roveena’s musical career. In addition to CityTV, Roveena has also been featured on Slice Network, OMNI TV and has performed for the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre, the NFL and TVi which boosted her profile in the South Asian community, both in Canada and internationally.

The remaining tunes on Perfect World were pitched to Roveena by some major publishing companies and songwriters keen to see their compositions given the Roveena treatment. Liz Rodrigues (Celine Dion, Eminem), Andrea England and Luke McMaster co-wrote “Love Will Light The Way,” Rob Wells (Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber), Jess Cates and Lindy Robbins teamed up on “I Lied,” and Nashville writing team Kent Agee, Burton Collins and David Worby contributed “Alone Another Night.”

“Musically these songs really fit with my image and theme,” she says. “I was hooked by the melodies, and the lyrics jumped out at me too. When such great writers want to pitch you their work, you can’t say no.”

Songwriting is still in its infancy for Roveena, however, she clearly has great potential as a writer. That is illustrated by the song “Perfect World,” a co-write with Producer, Brian Allen. It takes real creative courage for your first recorded original composition to be one addressing a social problem of women struggling with body image.

Helping frame Roveena’s force of nature voice on Perfect World, are a couple of master musicians. Juno-award winning Robert Michaels is internationally renowned as a fluent acoustic guitarist with a strong world music influence, while keyboardist Juno Award/Grammy nominated Sam Reid found fame as a member of Glass Tiger.

Perfect World features South Asian percussionists, on tablas, mridangam and dafli, and the use of baya and sitar further adds a subtle world music flavour to the compositions. Roveena is proud of her Tamil heritage, and wanted to reflect this on the album. “I loved bringing some different sounds to the music and identifying myself as South Asian. The aim was to have something commercial but also a little different,” she explains, citing such artists as Peter Gabriel and Sting as inspirations in this regard. Brian Allen adds “we began to call this sound pop with a little spice sprinkled over it.”

Roveena and her family have experienced a rather nomadic life, living in Sri Lanka, the U.K., and Nigeria prior to settling in Canada in the mid ’80s. She is now a passionately proud Canadian, declaring that she chose the album title “because Perfect World is a good reflection of what my life is, being an immigrant in this country. I live a duality, but I now identify myself as a Canadian first.”

Perfect World is available on all major online retailers as of October 16, 2012.

Seattle’s Shyan Selah Serves Up Soul-Infused Hip Hop On Debut LP, Brave New World and BE BRAVE Tour

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) November 22, 2008

Just when you thought Hip Hop was lost to snap music and seductive ring tones, Seattle based artist Shyan Selah delivers an edgy sound that infuses funk, rock, and R&B on his debut album Brave New World. The highly acclaimed rapper and activist is booked to perform at top-tier and grassroots venues across the US and abroad on his BE BRAVE Tour in January, 2009.

High Powered Entertainment and Brave New World Records bring you the future of Hip Hop that crosses through genres, with Shyan Selah’s freshman record. Songs from the album are inspired by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Tupac Shakur, and many of music’s pioneers of unique sounds that have mentored this young artist. “I’ve found inspiration through all types of music that move people and create a visual story instead of just reminiscing on my own personal experiences,” says Shyan. “My edge comes from a willingness to embrace the extreme and create an artistic explanation of the experience.”

Based on the company’s mantra; “Be Brave”, the LP reflects Shyan’s talent for introducing the most unexpected content over amazingly unique and soulful music. Selections from Brave New World such as “Oh My Godd “My Musik,” or “The Summer We Fell in Luv”, leave the listener with a evocative feeling of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, and Marvin Gaye. New school flavor isn’t lost with smooth beats and conscious lyrics, with nuances from Nas, Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, and Jay Z on “Soul Myousic,” “Hustla,” “Luv Me Or Leave Me Alone” and “Carpe Diem.”

The first single from Brave New World, “Hollywood Blvd” pulls a simple truth from adoring eyes of the American public on the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Shyan sings of drugs, money, and the destructive price of fame in the L.A. scene that everyone wants so badly to join. With the momentum of Brave New World already on high, NBC/Paramount has picked up “Hollywood Blvd” to air in the hit series Numb3rs and has deemed it, “An instant hit, impossible not to dance to.” The combination of Shyan’s vivid lyrics complete with a pulsing base and screaming guitar solo from Dave “Davo” Foreman (Anthony Hamilton, Snoop Dogg, Aaliyah, Christina Aguilera) gives “Hollywood Blvd” the promise of major cross-over appeal. High Powered Entertainment CEO, and notable West Coast producer John “J” Silva (Snoop Dogg, E-40, Kurupt, Keyshia Cole) bridged the deal with KOCH Entertainment to distribute Brave New World.

Shyan Selah’s contribution doesn’t stop at the legendary House of Blues recording studio where Brave New World was spawn; he is also the COO of The Jimi Hendrix Foundation in Seattle where he serves as a spokesman for the Rock & Roll pioneer. Shyan’s talent reaches from his lyrics, album, and advocacy to pass the baton of Hip Hop’s inspiration to today’s youth.

“In continuing with our model to ‘be brave’ it is a mandate in our corporate philosophy to be true to our community and to interject inspiration and motivation to the youth in that community,” says Shyan. “I am eager to assist community organizations across the country by providing solid solutions that re-energize our youth,” proclaims Selah.

Shyan’s educational and community outreach will continue with his “Stay in sChOOL” Tour, kicking off in his home state of Washington where he will visit over 70 high schools and over 20 colleges before embarking on his national “Be Brave Tour” in January.

Brave New World brings the best of Shyan Selah all the way around: the MC and the vocalist, the hustler and the community leader. His unique tone, character and voice, bring a much needed relief to the state of mainstream Hip Hop, and strengthen the bridge to the cross over genre of rap and R&B.

Currently promoting Brave New World domestically and abroad, Selah is gracing audiences from Honolulu, Hawaii to Lagos, Nigeria. Shyan Selah’s BE BRAVE Tour appearances and performances include:

Singer-Songwriter Sonnet Follows Up Campaign, With The Release Of Her Debut EP

Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) September 17, 2012

On September 25th, just weeks after the release of a series of three national commercials for, which feature her singing O is the One for the brands new campaign, Sonnet Simmons will release her self-titled debut EP on her label, Kiss Me Records.

With her forthcoming EP, Sonnet examines male and female dynamics, juxtaposed with lessons shes learned about life, love, and relationships. The ascending singer-songwriter delivers a fresh perspective of pop that blends Gwen Stefanis electro pop beats, with Fiona Apples poetic prowess and Sara Bareilles piano styling

Sonnet (a name derived from the Italian word, sonetto, which means little song or little sound), first acquired commercial success when her buoyant song, Youre So Good for Me was featured in a 2009 Coca Cola/Lagoon Park campaign. Following the commercial, the song hit the Top 100 downloads list at Amazon, appeared on iTunes, and garnered over 40K downloads in its initial month. On August 21st of 2012, debuted the first in a series of three commercials featuring Sonnet singing the first ever song, O is the One.

On Sonnet she continues to demonstrate her musical aptitude, despite being slightly hearing impaired in her left ear, with an EP that showcases pulsating electro beats, sparkling choruses and unifying themes. The eight-song EP marks the culmination of an intense period of personal and professional growth; a time when she made a conscious choice to fight for her career and solidify her signature sound.

Originally the EP title was Boys & Girls, echoing the fundamental relationship rapport. Many of my girlfriends would like to think that boys think the same as girls do. However, I find, guys are much more straight-forward. They dont over think things in the same mystifying ways girls do. Girls are complex but men love us regardless, Sonnet says with a smile.

The first track Boys is an effervescent track with a groovy reggae texture. Percolating synths and cautious rhythmic optimism propel Ill Be the One You Want. A mid-tempo change up, Long Road, glistens with subtle bells and soothing harmonies, while Last Dance, is a parting of ways anthem and invitation to Kiss me like you mean it/Like youll never ever see me again amplified with billowing electronica and persistent tambourine.

Girls, the fifth track on the album, is dominated by sassy synths and demanding drums, while What If is an eloquent ballad which showcases Sonnets range and vulnerability, along with her piano styling. The first five tracks are meant to be fun, while presenting an identifiable theme, but What If and Half Your Heart are intended to expose raw emotion and provoke thought, says Sonnet.

If you can offer music that is easily digestible, but has meaning and depth, with lyrics that speak to your soul, then you win. You get to sing along and are left with something to think about, she says. And with her debut, Sonnet is a conduit, using her personal narrative and the power of possibility to inspire an honest, enthralling prologue of enchanting artistry.

Get Smart: Deep ‘SHONTELLIGENCE’ Reveals an Irresistible New Talent — Barbados-Born Beauty SHONTELLE Co-Writes and Sings a Stunning Debut Album on SRP/SRC/Universal Motown Debut single “T-Shirt” is TOP 20 at Mainstream Pop Radio!

NEW YORK (PRWEB) October 10, 2008

And it gets better from theremuch better. SHONTELLE’s debut album SHONTELLIGENCE, is a state-of-the-art, magnetic and musically comprehensive playlist for today’s global pop and urban music fan — an unmistakable giant step onto center stage for the 23-year old native of Bridgetown, Barbados. The album is scheduled for release on November 18, 2008, through SRP Records’ affiliation with SRC, the Universal Motown-distributed imprint of hip-hop entrepreneur and urban marketing innovator Steve Rifkind, making her the label-mate of the SRC platinum-plus artists Akon and David Banner. SHONTELLE’s debut also features the idealistic and inspiring “Battle Cry,” which was chosen for the unique all-star CD/download compilation Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement, developed for the Presidential campaign of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

In the eleven songs of SHONTELLIGENCE, she takes ownership of a musical palette that broadens and deepens with each successive track. Throughout the album, SHONTELLE’s voice is assertive and exuberant, with an impressive lyrical consciousness enveloping a boundary-busting pop-urban spectrum, from the multicultural riddim-centric soca of “Roll” and “Focus Pon Me,” to the reggae tracks “Life is Not an Easy Road,” “Crave You,” “Flesh and Bone.” There’s also a literate and progressive neo-soul vibe to “Superwoman,” “Plastic People” and “Ghetto Lullaby,” and a retro/alternative urban note in “Cold Cold Summer.”

Like the most talented of today’s young entertainers, Shontelle Layne made her mark first as a writer, co-composing the award-winning soca smash and girl-power anthem “Roll” in 2005. Producer/songwriters Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken of SRP Records, whose production company had previously discovered and launched fellow Bajan native Rihanna as a worldwide superstar, had sought to contact the writer of “Roll” with a view to creating a cover for the international market. They were first stunned, and then delighted, to recognize that the hit songwriter — and straight-A entertainment law student — had all the makings of a world-class performer as well. “We couldn’t believe that Shontelle was such a great singer, and so young and beautiful, and hadn’t been discovered yet,” says Rogers.

Over a year and a half of focused work and patient development, Shontelle joined the SRP production company, and recorded her album, co-writing with producers Sturken and Rogers, and collaborating with other A-list hitmakers, including Wayne Wilkins and Andrew Frampton (“T-Shirt”) Stargate (“Superwoman”) and the Heavyweights and the Jam (“Battle Cry”), as well as the hometown Barbados-based teams Classic Soul (“Focus Pon Me”) and De Red Boys (“Crave You”). She signed with Steve Rifkind’s SRC Records early in 2008.

Defining “intelligence” recently to an interviewer as “the gathering of new knowledge or information, the ability to comprehend and profit from experience,” SHONTELLE reflected that “knowledgefeeds my life and my music. The more I learn, the more I want to learn…the more I grow as a person, and as an artist.”

Rocker D.Ryan’s New Album, Souls on Shoes Feat. The Debut Single “Baby, Baby Keep Shinning” Drops June 21st Live in Nashville June 18th at 12th & Porter

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) June 14, 2011

In a music climate saturated by “Idol” clones and “sounds-likes,” D.Ryan is an artist making his own rules and churning out great music. Talk about a rocker with a heart, his new single, “Baby, Baby Keep Shining” was written for his 5 year old niece. It’s the debut single off of the new album Souls on Shoes. The video premier for the single “Baby, Baby Keep Shining” is slated for the album release bash June 18th at 12th & Porter in Nashville with the album dropping nationally and at iTunes on June 21st.

A rare find — even in a town saturated with talented musicians — D.Ryan’s tracks are stand-alone gems. His thick, soulful voice, head of wild curls and untamed exuberance captivate even the most discriminating of listeners. “He’s not an up and coming artist, he’s and artist who has arrived!” says multi-platinum selling songwriter and producer Mike Puwal and producer Phil Ricciardi, the men behind the board for the project. Truly passionate about his music reaching others, D.Ryan plans to promote Souls on Shoes by launching a 50/50 Tour, traveling to 50 states in 50 days later this year. His goal is simple, he says, “I plan to take my message on the road and benefit all the hard-working individuals, like myself that make up our country.”

Regarding his debut single, D.Ryan says, “I wanted to write a song to let my niece know how much I love her. She lives 2,600 miles away from me and I miss her terribly. She always calls me and leaves these cute little messages on my cell phone telling me how much she misses me, and it just breaks my heart, all I can do is just tell her to keep shining bright cause ‘you’re my light in the dark.’ I hope anyone who has a child or a loved one who they do not get to spend enough time with, can relate.”

All these ingredients have combined to create the passion that makes D.Ryan is an artist with one simple agenda. He concludes, “I simply want my music to reach the people.”

Notes About the Production and album, Souls on Shoes: D.Ryan says, “I kept my style real on this project!! I have not conformed to my surroundings in Nashville. Nashville is a city not a musical style!! I chose to put together a great album in a great city with great producers. This album completes my journey from the last 6 years of my life. I wanted a record that anyone could listen to and find at lest 1 song they would dig. I wanted it fun, I wanted it clean, I wanted it heart-felt, true, and to the point. I wanted the kids to be able to buy it, so I was careful with my slang. I hope this album changes lives, I hope I can write another album better than this one. I hope people understand it. I hope all my ex-girlfriends hear it and it pisses them off!!! I hope my true family members dig the changes from some of the original demos that they grew to love. And finally, I hope it encourages people to realize that TRUE REAL artists do exist, and not all hope is lost in the music industry.”

The Artist’s Favorite 2 tracks: I think MY EVERYTHING is probably one of my most emotional songs I have ever written. In truth, I really hate listening to it because it still tears me up, and takes me back to a dark time in my life. I think WHAT’S UP WITH THE WAY IT’S GOING DOWN will always be one of my favorites, because of the message. I got political without being too political. I intentionally used some edgy tongue and cheek techniques lyrically, and I kept the old school vibe with the execution. I love, love, love, my song STATE OF THE WORLD. I wrote this with my girl Sha Beard in Nashville, and she is my soul sista!! This song is very honest and is executed perfectly!! I love the feeling, and groove of it.”

The Producers: Working with Mike Puwal and Phil Ricciardi was amazing. I would take a bullet for these Kats. I love em. Mike P came to one of my shows in Nashville a couple years ago, and I could tell from the look on his face that he instantly got what I am doing. We clicked instantly. And it did not take more than about 5 minutes to realize that Phil was going to be a perfect match to make this tripod complete on this album. Phil is such a good mentor, suto-managing me, every night talking me through all the ins-and-outs of the business. These are simply 2 great dudes that know how to take an artists vision and capture it! Completely and perfectly!! This was the easiest album I have ever recorded, smooth, simple, painless. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them and at a great studio like The Parlor in Nashville.
