I like the song. It’s both sad and touching how the guy is willing to let the girl go – hoping that she will find a better life.

  1. I usually don’t like love songs, but Justin is really good at writing emotional songs. The song isn’t necessarily about any relationship in particular, but it’s somewhat of an apology to the stuff he put his family and friends through with his drug addiction.

  2. This song is one of the most poignant, heartbreaking songs I have ever heard. It has been one of my all time favorite songs since my alcoholic mother dedicated it to me. Most people interpret it as a love song, I interpreted it, when I first saw the video as an “I’m sorry mom” song, which it also is. It’s an apology to his mom, a “please move on” to his ex girlfriend and an apology to everyone he hurt with his alcoholism. Now though, the only way I can interpret it is as a mother to daughter song, it really helped me understand my mother’s pain. Parts of it are really heartbreaking, especially
“I’m sober now for 3 whole months, it’s one accomplishment that you helped me with.
The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won’t touch again.
In a sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night
While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight
You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate.
You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take
So I’ll drive so fucking far away that I’ll never cross your mind
And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind”
“And then she whispered “How can you do this to me?”"
because those things actually happened, I was her care-giver for as long as I can remember. Then one day she just left for a year and a half and had no contact with me.
Anyway, that’s what this song means to me. =]
